Save the date Tuesday, May 26, 2020 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM (AST)

Educators in VR Research team has invited XR PEDAGOGY to speak to a. workshop “VR for Natural Disaster Preparedness: Study of the Denial of Hurricane Risks in Teenagers.”

160 million people worldwide are affected by natural disasters each year such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, or hurricanes. Effective training of young people is a fondation of disaster preparedness efforts worldwide. Virtual Reality (VR) environments appears promising in its ability to bridge the gaps of other commonly established training formats. Young people are more likely to engage in their learning and most of all, their risk perception may also evolved thanks to immersion in VR. We will present a concret exemple of a vr-based training for hurricane preparedness and the challenges encountered. We will show you how a VR game could help teenagers to be able to better memorize the elements of Hurricane preparation in a harmless situation for their physical and mental integrity and also to challenge their perception of danger.

Altspace VR Events educators in VR research

How to attend this event?

An event in virtual reality takes place in a virtual environment and several platforms offer these services, however, to attend the virtual reality international summit, “Educator in VR“, I went to the “ALTSPACE VR” platform.

  • “ALTSPACE VR” is a social platform for virtual reality, a virtual place where people can meet and relax to exchange. No matter where you are in the world, no matter your nationality, your finances, your skin color, your disabilities or if you are an alien in the real world:  if you have an internet connection and a pc or, a virtual reality equipment,  you can come meet people. You may learn awesome knowledges and immerse your senses. Virtual reality is fooling your brain into processing the experience as if it were really happening, you are immersed in the sensation of presence.

  • The “petit plus”,  is the positive impact for the planet.  Attend an event inVirtual Reality  prevent a lot of carbone dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Instead of traveling, staying in hotels and using a convention center, attendes are (safe?) at home. For Educator in VR summit: 7,587,489 kg of CO2 were saved, you can check the calculations in detail here).

The Educators in VR Research Team features researchers from across the spectrum of VR/AR/XR research and development, coming together to share their knowledge, techniques, and research and learn from each other. Join them/us to discuss the possibilities and potential of research in VR. They host regular meetups and workshops for discussion and learning.

Evelien Ydo (with the black jacket, the glasses and the pink hairs on the picture), is a research specialist in virtual reality, exploring human factors, learning psychology, and presentation and conversational skills. She is finishing her masters of Educational Science and Technology degree with research in assessment in VR, and seeking out all researchers to connect and share their research techniques, technologies, challenges, and work together.

Educators in VR hosts weekly workshops on Tuesdays, as well as throughout the week for special events and team project workshops across multiple VR platforms.
